A Brief History Of Rotary

Rotary's main objective is service the community, in the workplace, and around the globe. The 1.2 million Rotarians who make up more than 34,000 Rotary clubs in nearly every country in the world share a dedication to the ideal of Service Above Self.

Rotary International, the world's first community service organization, was started in 1905 in Chicago by a group of professional and business men who wanted to give something back to their community.

The Rotary name derived from the early practice of rotating meetings between member's offices.
Rotary's popularity spread, and within a decade, clubs were formed from San Francisco to New York to Winnipeg, Canada.

The Rotary Club of Philadelphia was chartered in 1911 and over the years additional clubs were organized throughout Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. The Rotary Club of Jenkintown was chartered in 1924, and grew to such an extent, that after World War II, it's leadership decided to expand Rotary by sponsoring other clubs in neighboring communities. One of those clubs was in Cheltenham. The Cheltenham Rotary was was charted in 1952
